Description

The Federal Office of Police fedpol processes biometric identification data transmitted by cantonal, federal and foreign authorities in connection with criminal prosecutions or the fulfilment of other legal tasks. To this end, fedpol compares incoming requests for the identification of persons and crime scene traces in the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) and stores these, where required by law. The current AFIS is to be replaced by mid-2027. In addition to the AFIS replacement, the project also includes the optional procurement of a module for facial image comparison. This works in the same way as the AFIS module: For example, in criminal proceedings, a facial image of a suspect can be compared with the facial images stored in the AFIS. A comparison of these images with real-time recordings (e.g. surveillance cameras) or other databases (e.g. social media) is not planned due to the lack of a legal basis.
