Description

The Institute for Aquatic Research in Kastanienbaum traces its origins back to the 'Hydrobiological Laboratory' founded in 1916 by the Natural History Society of Lucerne. This was taken over by Eawag in 1960 and has been continuously modernized since. The small laboratory has evolved into a competence center for ecology, evolution, and biogeochemistry, attracting researchers from all over the world. Eawag belongs to the ETH Domain and is an independent research institution headquartered in Dübendorf. The Kastanienbaum site is to be expanded with a new building. Concurrently, the new building is intended to optimize operational processes across the entire premises and compensate for spatial deficits at the research location. The existing, terraced complex will be extended on the hillside with a narrow, horizontal structure. The design of the new building moves away from the cubic concrete architecture of the laboratory building and aligns itself with rural architectural forms in the surrounding area through its pitched roof and timber cladding. Viewed from the lake, the existing laboratory building remains dominant. The new building is perceived as part of the landscape."
